There are a lot of people who are angry about a joke in The Avengers. If you don’t want to know anything about the movie (it’s probably a little too late for that already, right?) then you might not want to read the rest of this article.
There’s a place in the film where Thor is talking with the rest of the Avengers, defending Loki. Someone points out that Loki has killed 80 people. Thor immediately responds with “He’s adopted”.
Apparently a lot of adoptees are angry about this. I was adopted. I can’t help but feel that people who think this is cruel to adoptees are completely missing the joke. The joke isn’t that Loki being adopted somehow turned him into a mass-murderer. The joke is how quickly Thor distances himself from Loki when he hears that Loki has been murdering people.
“I’m defending him, he’s family!”
“He’s a mass-murderer!”
(not even a beat of hesitation)
“Oh. We’re not really related after all.”
Get it?
I laughed. The audience laughed. I guess if you have to explain it, it really wasn’t that funny after all.
